On November 30, the nation’s first two government-approved safe injection sites opened in New York City. Places where users can inject heroin and other illegal drugs under professional supervision without fear of arrest. Injection points also provide injection needles as well as detoxification and other health services. Mayor Bill de Blasio called it the right way to protect the most vulnerable and address overdoses, but acknowledged that injection sites could face federal prosecution. More than 100,000 people died from drug overdoses in the United States from April 2020 to April 2021, according to statistics.
